The car has to be right.
Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, a used car from a dealer must be:
- Of satisfactory quality, taking into account its age, mileage and price.
- Fit for purpose, including any purpose you told us about.
- As described, in the advert and by us.
If it isn’t
- Within 30 days: you can reject the car and get a full refund.
- After 30 days: you’re entitled to a repair or a replacement. If the fault appears within six months of buying, it’s assumed to have been there when you bought the car, unless we can show it wasn’t.
- If a repair doesn’t fix it: you can ask for a price reduction or reject the car. With cars, the refund can be reduced to take account of the use you’ve had.
What it doesn’t cover
Normal wear and tear for the car’s age and mileage, faults we pointed out to you before you bought it, and faults you should have spotted if you inspected the car before buying.
If you buy without visiting
If you buy online or over the phone without coming to see the car, you usually have 14 days after delivery to cancel for any reason.
If you use finance
You have 14 days after signing a credit agreement to withdraw from it. You’d repay what you’ve borrowed, plus any interest up to that point.
